8 Tips for People Who Always Lose Their Keys

You’re on your way out the door during the morning rush. You grab your coffee, breakfast and everything else you need for the day, and then this happens: you can’t find your keys. Sound familiar? This is an annoying situation that happens to virtually everyone and it always seems to happen at the most inconvenient time.

A recent study found that on average, we spend roughly 10 minutes a day looking for lost items. This includes cellphones, glasses, paperwork, and of course – keys. This adds up to almost 2.5 days a year, and 150 days over your life span looking for things like your keys.

But there are ways to combat this and ensure that you keep your keys close by, minimizing the stress and hassle of forgetting or losing them. Check out the following tips for the best ways to help stop losing your keys for good.

8 Tips to Help You Stop Losing Your Keys

  1. Put them in the same space. This may sound obvious but it works. Constantly put your keys on the same hook or in the same bowl or basket every day. Eventually, you will train your brain to consistently put them there.
  2. Use a wall mount key box or key hider. In line with putting your keys in the same space, we recommend a wall mount key box or key hider, which can be installed inside or outdoors and not only keep your keys organized in one spot but also keep them safely hidden away.
  3. Get a Bluetooth key finder. Bluetooth is utilized in so many other ways, so why not let it help you find your keys? There are a variety of different models that connect with your phone to help you track down your keys. Isn’t technology great?
  4. Keep things organized. This may seem easier said than done, but if you use a few simple organizational tricks, it can really help you out. Declutter as much as possible to cut down on the possibility of losing your keys among it and utilize baskets to keep things neat and tidy.
  5. Use visualization to train your brain. The most scientific method on this list is to use visualization techniques. Train your mind to remember where you set things. Have a specific area where you put your keys, by the front door for example, and visualize yourself putting them there. Over time, that image will be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your keys.
  6. Use reminders. It may seem a little overkill but setting reminders by writing them down or putting them in a phone calendar can be a great way to remember where we leave things, especially when life gets hectic. If you’re in the middle of doing a bunch of different things, making a quick reminder of where you left your keys and even setting a recurring alert will help you remember better.
  7. Use bright and colourful keychains. Keychains might not be as fashionable as they once were, but they can certainly help you find your keys. Having a large, bright-coloured lanyard or other item attached to your keys makes them easier to spot when you’re scanning a room or going through your purse. As an added benefit, a keychain clip that can be attached to a purse or belt loop is also handy for ensuring that your keys stay with you.
  8. Have a spare and a good locksmith handy. Make an extra set of keys and hide them outside your house or leave them with a neighbour. Also, make sure you have a trustworthy and reliable locksmith in your contacts list who is available to assist when you need it. [1]
