Is it Worth the Investment?
It’s hard to put a price on peace of mind. But consider these statistics:
Canada’s Burglary Rate is Higher than You Think
Canada’s home-theft frequency is 600 per 100,000/population. Even though that’s higher than Japan’s and Italy’s combined, the vast majority of us do not have a secure place in our homes for valuables. Why wouldn’t you protect yourself?
Fire – How Real is the Risk?
The National Fire Protection Association says that during an average lifetime, there’s a one in four chance of experiencing a household fire large enough to warrant calling the fire department.
Keep Unsafe Objects Out of the Wrong Hands
If you have children, you need to keep dangerous objects such as guns out of their reach. Home safes are a great way to do so.
The Bottom Line
Anyone who has important documents or heirlooms that are rich in sentimental value should definitely consider this investment. Don’t risk losing something that’s hard or impossible to replace.
What Are You Looking to Secure?
Home safes offer protection against burglary, fire, or even water damage. Our expertise can guide you through the endless selection by first determining what it is that you want to secure.
Navigating Ratings
One of the important factors in making a selection is comparing ratings.
Quality safes are rated by Underwriter Laboratories (UL) for both fire resistance and theft deterrence.
Fire Resistance
UL tests models using 3 different temperatures and 5 different time durations. Home safes are then rated accordingly. What rating you need depends on what you’re planning to store.
For example – papers, jewels and handguns can withstand up to 350 degrees of interior heat. However, photographs, DVDs, recorded tapes or similar items start to disintegrate at just 125 degrees.
Burglary Rating
UL testers go at safes with tools, torches, and even explosives. Then, they assign a “TL” rating number. A TL of 15 means that a thief would have to work for 15 minutes to open the safe.
This may not sound like a lot, but the average thief wants to get in and out of the house as quickly as possible, and even if they discover your safe, they’re unlikely to want to devote much time to trying to crack it.
Professional Installation Preserves Your Home Insurance Protection
You might be surprised to learn that if manufacturer’s instructions are not followed during installation, you could find yourself at a loss for coverage if something happens. Ensure you’re financially protected if a thief manages to crack your safe by relying on professional installation.
